The old adage suggests that a picture paints a thousand words. So, why then, would you want to add words on top of a picture? I personally don’t know, but Instagram seems to think it’s a good option to offer.

Instagram Launches New Text Tools for Everyone

As outlined in a post on theInstagram Creators Blog, Instagram has launched several new text tools designed to help creators stand out.

The headline feature is the ability to add text and stickers to your photos. This means that yourfantastic smartphone shotscan be obscured by some inane writing or another shot layered on top of the original one.

Examples of Instagram’s new text tools applied to photos

Instagram is also adding new fonts, animations, and effects that you’re able to use in Reels and Stories. These can be mixed and matched in order for you to at least feel like you’re unique and able to stand out from the crowd.

Lastly, you may now create Carousels containing up to 20 photos or videos. And if you apply these text tools while doing so, you can truly create a wonderful mess.

How to Use Instagram’s New Text Tools

As you would expect, using Instagram’s new text tools is self-explanatory and user-friendly.

To add text to a photo, simply tap theTextbutton after selecting the photo you want to post to your feed. And to layer another photo on top in the form of a sticker, tap theGallerybutton in the top-right of the screen. You can then change the shape of the sticker by tapping on it.

To see the new fonts, open theTexttool and tap on theTextbutton. Once you have found one you like, you’re able to animate it or add an effect.

To create a longer Carousel, tapPostand add as many photos or videos as you want (up to a maximum of 20).

I’m an Instagram Purist, But You Do You

To be clear, you could already ruin your photos with text and stickers, but only if you used a third-party app such as Canva before uploading your shot to Instagram. Now, thanks to these new text tools for creators, you can ruin your photos from right within the Instagram app.

I must admit, I’m something of an Instagram purist, only using it to upload carefully chosen and edited shots. So I’m not about to ruin one of my smartphone photos by writing all over it. But if this sounds like your kind of thing, have fun with it.
