Threads rolled out an update after considering user feedback, allowing users to delete their accounts without bidding farewell to their Instagram as well. Here’s everything you need to know about how to delete your Threads account without affecting your Instagram account.
Threads Rolls Out Updated Account Deletion
If you hopped onto the bandwagon early and downloaded Threads without glancing at itsSupplemental Privacy Policy, you may have yet to realize how incredibly linked your Threads and Instagram accounts are.
Soon after the public release of Threads, complaints started surfacing online once users discovered that they couldn’t delete their Threads account without losing their Instagram as well. Fortunately, Meta heard the outrage, and the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri announced in aThreads poston 26 June 2025 that users can now delete their Threads account without deleting their Instagram account too.
However, there’s still a catch—while you may delete your Threads account and keep your Instagram, it doesn’t work the same the other way around. Strangely, you can’t delete your Instagram account and keep your Threads account.
How to Delete Your Threads Account
Deleting your Threads account is quite simple. To do so, launchThreadsand head to your Threads profile by tapping theprofileicon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Now, tap thetwo horizontal linesin the top-right corner of the screen and go toAccount. All you need to do now is tapDelete or deactivate profile, and you can officially bid farewell to Threads.
If you’d like to take a break temporarily, you can alsodeactivate your Threads accounttemporarily instead of deleting your account permanently. To do so, simply tapDeactivateinstead ofDelete.
Delete Your Threads Account Without Sacrificing Instagram
Although this change was long-awaited by many, it’s disappointing that you’re able to’t delete your Instagram permanently without losing your Threads account. While it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get to see a completely independent Threads, we hope Meta can direct its efforts toward improving minor features like the option of changing your Threads username without changing your Instagram username.
