WhatsApp has announced that it is rolling out a Call Links feature that users can use to join voice and video calls on the messaging app. The feature is similar to links generated by other conferencing apps.

The company announced the new feature in a Twitter post on 26 September, 2022. Call Links will work similarly to Google Meet or Zoom links, which allow you to share join links for calls across a variety of platforms.

Head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart shared an image preview of the feature, which users will be able to access in their Calls tab. By clicking on theCreate call linkoption, users can generate a link that they can share with others, both on and off WhatsApp. This will allow people who aren’t in your contacts to join the call.

If you don’t see the feature on your device yet, it’s because it is set to roll out starting this week.

The Call Links feature comes on the heels of other quality-of-life improvements such as the ability to leave groups silently and tweaks to online status visibility settings.

However, Call Links could bring privacy concerns if links are shared with those who aren’t the intended participants. Leaks of Zoom links have derailed group meetings in the past, with the video calling platform implementing more access control for hosts.

Whether WhatsApp will give call hosts control over access remains to be seen. The app has only recently introduced the ability for group admins to delete messages. All these changes seem to be pre-empting therollout of WhatsApp Communities.
