Twitch’s New Hype Chat Feature Explained: A True 70/30 Revenue Split?

Most of Twitch’s Affiliates and Partners earn, at most, 50% of what their audience gives to them while Twitch takes the other half. Twitch has announced a new donation method where creators earn 70%. Let’s dive into the specifics of Twitch’s Hype Chat feature.

Twitch Unveils Hype Chat

Twitchintroduced a new feature, Hype Chat, on 30 May 2025. Viewers can use local currency to send a pinned chat message for durations ranging from a few minutes to several hours. The exact duration is dependent on the amount of money spent.

Twitch states that this is a 70/30 revenue split favoring creators, unlike the 50/50 split it places on most of its Affiliates and Partners for subscriptions and bits.

Twitch also plans to allow creators to help keep Hype Chat safe. Viewers cannot use words banned by Twitch or the creator, and creators can set minimum Hype Chat prices while manually removing chats they deem problematic.

At launch, Hype Chat is only open to Partners, but Twitch states plans to roll this feature out more broadly.

Is Hype Chat a True 70/30 Split?

Hype Chat is a true 70/30 split in terms of what the creator receives from the planned donated amount. However, there is an additional 5% transaction fee donors must pay asdetailed on Twitch’s Hype Chat FAQ.

As such, this split is effectively a 67/33 split of the total amount donated—far better than the original 50/50 most creators have with subscriptions, but not a true 70/30. Despite this, Twitch remains one of themost rewarding live streaming platforms.

How YouTube Super Chat Compares

Hype Chat is more or less a copy of YouTube’s Super Chat. Streaming educator Lowco notes the striking similarity between the two options.

Similarities aside, these two payment methods have one major yet subtle difference. With Super Chat, YouTube covers the transaction fee with the company’s 30% cut. On the other hand, Twitch charges viewers the 5% transaction fee. A $5 Super Chat will distribute that $5 on a 70/30 split, but viewers will pay $5.25 when considering the fee.

Presuming Twitch rolls this out to Affiliates, Hype Chat is more accessible to small creators than YouTube Super Chat due to the platform’s comparably higher monetization requirements, even after YouTube loosened monetization requirements.

Another Step in the Right Direction

Twitch is taking a step in the right direction, as with their other announcements like the Partner Plus program. However, when other platforms already have the exact same option and give creators a larger percentage of donations, Twitch still can do better to differentiate itself.

Other platforms like YouTube and Kick are providing strong competition, and Twitch needs to do more to keep its position as the top platform for streamers.
