According to the interview,a mixture of large-scale sets and on-location shooting are used. As Powell says, “they recreated an entire neighborhood” for one part ofTwisters, whereas in other parts they filmed on-location in places that had been destroyed by tornadoes. He and Edgar-Jones lauded the “level of detail” inTwisters, with Edgar-Jones mentioning that there were “extras who were members of the Red Cross.” Check out the full quotes from Powell and Edgar-Jones below:

Powell:I’ll just say, from one of the most impressive days that I think I saw on set in terms of a production build aspect, in terms of the design, they recreated an entire neighborhood. There’s a huge tornado that rips through this town and it severs houses in half, which is what happens. In these houses, some things you see that are absolutely untouched, which just happens in real life and then some are destroyed. But they built an entire house and you walk through these homes, and there were pictures and the photos and the real life that happened, was happening inside that house before that tornado. It’s just that level of detail is what makes this movie so incredible, because you just don’t see that.

Edgar-Jones:We had a lot of background actors and extras who were members of the Red Cross, who obviously deal with real destruction, too. So I think the whole thing felt very authentic and sobering.

Will Twisters’ Massive Investments Pay Off?

Twisters Has A Huge Budget

Hearing Edgar-Jones and Powell’s descriptions helps contextualize the massive undertaking that wasTwisters. It should come as no surprise, then, thatTwistersboasts a budget of an estimated $200 million. For context, this putsTwistersas one of the most expensive movies made in 2024. EvenDune: Part Two, which included an A-list cast and high volumes of visual effects, had a lower budget, with an estimated $190 million going into the film. The scale of the set pieces was likely a main contributor toTwisters' pricey creation.

Twister Cast & Where They Are Now

While the modern cult classic film Twister stands out for a number of reasons, its iconic cast is one of the contributing factors to its greatness.

A budget this high givesTwistersa lot of pressure to perform. Hollywood’s listed budgets do not typically include the marketing and promotion costs in their listed budget, making it such that they have to make about 2.5x budget at the box office to profit. ForTwisters, this would mean a box office take home of around $500 million. To accomplish this feat,Twisterswould likely have to make it into the top 5 grossing films of 2024.

The originalTwisterbrought home $494.5 million, which bodes decently forTwisters. Audiences may be drawn in this week by the promise of elements like the lavish set pieces and improved CGI, increasingTwisters’chance at success. Hopefully, all the production work that went intoTwisterswill be worth it as the film prepares for release this weekend.
