One feature missing from Spotify’s extensive array of options is a randomizer. I’m not talking about randomizing a playlist; I want to hit a button and hear something completely new.
But now, with this tiny Spotify app, you can listen to a completely random song at long last.
How to Listen to Random Songs on Spotify
To listen to completely random songs on Spotify, all you need to do is sign in to theSpotify Random Songpage. It’s a free and open-source app available onGithub, developed by Roberto Medico. It finally brings completely randomized music to the world’s largest music streaming platform.
Once you sign into the app (you’ll have to let it connect to your Spotify account), you press the button, and a random track will start playing in either the Spotify web or desktop player.
When I took it for a spin, it played Mozart, Hozier, Guiseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, then something called Chow Lee and Sleepy Hollow. I actually knew the first three tracks and absolutely hated the fourth, but it was throwing out some different genres and options to my normal dizzying mix of techno and jungle.
The only downside is that there is no automatic play to keep the randomness going. Of course, if you hear a song you love, you canswitch to the Spotify song radioand hear some similar tunes.
Why I Love Hearing Random Songs on Spotify
There are over 100 million songs on Spotify. My 2023 Spotify Wrapped put me at around 45,000 minutes of listening for the year. With an average song length of around 3.5 minutes (and some back-of-a-napkin-math), I may have listened to 12,850-odd tracks.
Now, that doesn’t account for the songs I listened to on repeat, nor the podcasts I listen to, so consider that an inflated figure. Still, it shows that with nearly a month of listening time, I only heard a minute smattering of what Spotify offers.
The random option gives the chance to hear something truly different and break out of theSpotify feedback loop.
