When choosing a new laptop, many of us are tempted by flashy marketing and impressive, high-performance specs. However, not all laptops are created equal, especially if you intend to use it for gaming. Choosing the wrong one can lead to frustration and disappointment—a lesson I learned the hard way!
High Expectations of My New Laptop
I had high expectations when I decided to invest in a new laptop. I wanted a good all-around machine that could multitask, run demanding software without a hitch, and handle infrequent gaming sessions. With the rapid evolution of technology, I thought it would be easy to find a laptop that ticked all the boxes. This relatively new CPU is dubbed the most powerful processor Qualcomm has ever produced, boasting impressive specs and innovative AI capabilities. However, this choice would soon lead me down a frustrating path!

The Reality of the Snapdragon X Elite CPU
Since the Snapdragon X Elite is advertised as a powerful chip capable of giving MacBooks a run for their money, it seemed like the ideal choice for gaming. Unfortunately, the reality fell short. While it performs admirably for everyday tasks like browsing the web or streaming videos, gaming is a different story altogether.
Performance
In real-world gaming scenarios, the Snapdragon X Elite struggles to maintain the consistent, high frame rates needed for an immersive experience. Many gamers expect smooth gameplay at 60 frames per second (FPS) or higher, especially for fast-paced titles. Unfortunately, the X Elite often struggles to maintain half of that.
I quickly learned that the Snapdragon X Elite, while competent for general computing, couldn’t keep up with the demands of modern gaming. When I tried to play intensive games, I encountered stuttery visuals and input lag, while even less complex games struggled to run smoothly.

ARM Architecture
One of the most significant issues with the Snapdragon X Elite is the ARM architecture. While ARM chips have gained popularity in mobile devices and tablets due to their efficiency and low power consumption, they haven’t yet significantly impacted the laptop market.
ARM architecture struggles with the performance-heavy tasks that traditional x86 CPUs handle with ease. This means games optimized for x86 processors often run poorly or not at all on an ARM processor. Even games that support ARM architecture have subpar performance and longer load times.

Moreover, as the gaming industry continues to evolve, the demands placed on hardware will only increase. Many upcoming games will likely require more powerful and compatible processors, making it challenging for users of this CPU to keep up with new titles. Gamers looking for longevity in their hardware might be wise to choose established CPUs that can handle the latest gaming demands.
The Importance of a Good CPU for Gaming
After experiencing the shortcomings of the Snapdragon X Elite, it’s clear that a good CPU plays a vital role in gaming performance. The CPU is responsible for executing instructions, managing tasks, and processing data. A weak CPU can bottleneck performance, preventing even a high-end GPU from reaching its full potential. Most Windows devices run on the tried and tested x86 architecture, which most games are designed for.
In hindsight, I should have done more thorough research and not fallen for Snapdragon X Elite’s marketing. For anyone considering a laptop for gaming, I urge you to prioritize your CPU choice. Look for established options with a proven track record in the gaming community—typically those built on x86 architecture.
