The Dawn of Matter: Three Eve Smart Home Products Now Support the Standard
Another big milestone is here for the important Matter smart home protocol. Three smart home devices from Eve can now support the standard.
The First Three Matter Devices
First reported byThe Verge, theEve Energy smart plug,Eve Door & Window contact sensor, andEve Motion motion sensorare now Matter-compatible with a firmware upgrade.
Previously, all three of the Thread-enabled devices were only compatible with Apple HomeKit. That now changes.

They will now work with Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home once all three of those companies roll out Matter compatibility updates. Eve says over time, all of its products will be Matter compatible.
Amazon has previously stated it will addMatter support to 17 Echo devices this month, December 2022. And you’re able to also control those devices now with an Android smartphone and the SmartThings app.

In September 2022,we also got a firsthand lookat a Google Nest Hub controlling the Eve Energy smart plug.
If you own either of the devices, you will have to go through an optional update process because once completed, you can’t go back to being HomeKit only.

Once updated, you will still have all your HomeKit functionality on the devices like autonomous schedules, child lock, and advanced automations.
To upgrade, you’ll need to join Eve’s Early Access programhereby providing an email address. You will also need a Thread Border Router that is also an Apple Home Hub. That can be a HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV 4K.

You’ll also need an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 16.2. That software is currently in beta testing but is expected to be released in December 2022.
The Smart Home Future is Approaching
All the parts of the Matter future are beginning to take shape. With support from the major smart home systems and many accessory manufacturers, expect to hear more about how Matter can take the friction out of a smart home in 2023.
The standard has the opportunity to take the friction out of smart home products and hubs.
