Summary
Starfieldhas many activities and missions for players to partake in across different factions and star systems, with over 220 side quests available in the base game. These can vary from exploring secret outposts to answering distress calls, with other activities such as base or ship building and research projects designed to keep players busy as they venture across the Settled Systems.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that with so much to do, and the cyclical nature of the game’s main campaign and new game-plus modes, some players have already sunk hundreds to thousands of hours intoStarfieldsince its launch last year. This was the case with RedditorHead_Weakness8028, who responded to a post on the r/Starfield Subreddit about navigating a minefield in space, stating thatthey just recently found the quest in question after almost 1000 hours of playing the game.

The minefield mission is a random one that sees players encountering a random ship asking for help to download data from a survey satellite. The only problem is that to get close enough to the satellite to do so, players must fly their ship through an active minefield. Responding to the original poster, EmptyDarkH’s plea for help, Head_Weakness8028 did comment on how tough this mission was, but noted that in the end, it’s a case of finding an angle to fly around the field several times until the data was downloaded.
Starfield’s Best Ship Designs Are Surprisingly Weird
Starfield’s ship building is incredibly open-ended, but players will be able to survive tougher fights if they’re design is as strange as possible.
Starfield Needs More Missions In Space
Many Of Starfield’s Missions Happen On Land
Perhaps one of the reasons some players can sink so much time intoStarfieldwithout finding certain activities or missions is simply because of how empty space seems to be in general. While there are the occasional space battles against Spacers, most of the game’s main missions happen on land, so manyplayers tend to find themselves just fast traveling to whatever planet their objective is on.
As has been shared by various streamers in the past, it can takehours to manually fly between some planetswith very little happening in that time, suggesting that Bethesda intended for players to use fast travel to get around most places. This is a shame considering how muchtime players can put into designing their ship, only to not really experience using it as often outside of arriving at a planet.

Activities such as the one mentioned in EmptyDarkH’s post show thatthere are things to do in space, but they don’t seem to appear all that frequently, even for those who do tend to go exploring. There have been mods such as theDark Universe’s “Crossfire” by Kaosnyrbthat add more variety of space combat toStarfield, but when looking at adding more content in feature - whether via the Creations portal or in future patches - Bethesda should definitely look more into space-based missions.

Starfield
Bethesda Game Studios presents Starfield - the first original IP from the studio in twenty-five-plus years. Set in the year 2310, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective are observing a shaky truce after a war set 20 years prior. The player will customize their character as a member of a space exploration team called Constellation while navigating The Settled Systems and the conflicts between the warring factions. According to Bethesda, players can explore over 100 systems and 1000 planets to find resources and build their ships, living out their own sci-fi journeys.
