Summary
A newStar Warsfan theory suggests there may be a shocking Imperial spy inAndorthat went undetected by everyone—including by Cassian Andor himself.Andoris one ofStar Wars’best TV shows, and the upcoming season 2 is among the most anticipated ofStar Wars’upcoming TV shows. Although many details remain under wraps, the show’s second and final season will need to bridgeAndorseason 1 andRogue One: A Star Wars Story, suggesting a thrilling addition toStar Warsmovies and TV shows.
However, in advance ofAndorseason 2, one fan has theorized that a critical Imperial spy may have gone entirely undercover, revealing just how crafty the Empire may prove to be. Specifically,WaltEpitheton X identified an image fromThe Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, written by Chris Kempshall, that may reveala shockingly brilliant Imperial informant: a staircase droid.

If thisStar Warsfan theory is correct, then it proves the Empire’s genius; after all, not only would such a droid never be suspected of acting as an informant, but also, this droid’s role would give it discreet access to information that a living, breathing informant could never get.

Did A Lot Of Droids Work For The Empire?
The originalStar Warstrilogy made it clear that the Empire had a number of strategies, and newer additions totheStar Warstimelinehave revealed in even greater detail how the Empire approached its galactic domination. Clearly, the Sith were at the helm, with both Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader ruling side-by-side. The Empire’s use of stormtroopers is, of course, also legendary and iconic. Interestingly,Star Wars: The Clone Warsrevealed that this idea was not original to the Empire, though; rather, the stormtroopers seemed heavily based on the clone troopers of the Clone Wars era.
Since the prequel trilogy,Star Warsalso revealed thatDarth Vader’s Imperial Inquisitorsalso played a key role in the Empire, although the Inquisitors' job was much more focused on hunting down and executing anysurvivors of Order 66or new Force-sensitive beings in the galaxy than it was on helping the Empire gain and maintain control of the various planets of the galaxy. However, this fan theory raises questions about how much the Empire may have relied upon droids.
Presumably, this would not have been a strategy Palpatine and Vader prioritized.
Presumably, this would not have been a strategy Palpatine and Vader prioritized. Clearly, throughout the Clone Wars, the Separatists made clear the ways that battle droids would not be nearly as effective as clone troopers (or, obviously, full-fledged Jedi). However, having something as unassuming as a staircase droid would be a brilliant, brand-new use of droids that would certainly have been very effective.
Although this remains just a fan theory, it nevertheless does suggest that the Empire may have been employing genius espionage strategies with droids. Moreover, this would align with the incredible footage fromThe Mandalorian & Grogurevealed at this year’s D23 event, which showed a mouse droid’s point-of-view. Sadly, this theory may never be confirmed one way or another, but perhapsAndorseason 2 will reveal this and other strategies the Empire used asStar Wars’Imperials faced greater and greater threats from the Rebels.
