Harry Potterwas an eight-movie series that was full of tragic character deaths, but there was one death that came through better in the books.TheHarry Pottermovieswere based on J.K. Rowling’s famous book series, which centered around the wizard Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwarts, the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After a rocky start, Harry got to know his godfather, Sirius Black. As the only family Harry had left, Sirius was a critical connection. After the confusion of Sirius' identity was resolved, the two quickly formed a strong bond, which made Sirius' death hugely important.
Sirius was introduced intheHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabanmovie, starting viewers off on a journey that would see Sirius become vital to Harry. The Animagus was imprisoned in Azkaban but escaped once he realized the grave danger that Harry was in and proceeded to make himself known as Harry’s godparent, despite being a wanted man. Sirius remained a fugitive for the rest of his life before finally meeting his end at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange. Sirius' catastrophic death as he tumbled through the veil made a huge impact in the books but didn’t land in the same way in the movie.

The Harry Potter Movies Cut Too Many Scenes Showing Harry & Sirius' Relationship
Harry And Sirius Were Closer In The Book
Harry Potter and Sirius Black grew incredibly close since Sirius' identity was revealed, but this didn’t come through in the Warner Bros. movies. This reducedthe effect of Sirius Black’s deathwhen it finally occurred inHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. From Sirius' very first appearance inHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there were more Harry-Sirius moments that the movies could have included. Including them would have communicated the depth of Harry and Sirius' love and the amount of time they had spent talking, making Sirius' death seem as devastating as it was in the book.
HBO is currently working on aHarry PotterTV show for 2026.
The relationship between Harry and Sirius blossomed significantly throughoutHarry Potter and the Goblet of FireandHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.Harry and Sirius exchanged lettersand Harry confided in Sirius, reaching a point where Sirius was as good as a surrogate father.Sirius saw a lot of James Potter in Harry, even going so far as to get them mixed up. This made Sirius more human and revealed the poignant level of his stunted emotional development. Unable to process the loss of his friends, he was thrown into Azkaban and left without emotional support, later latching onto Harry to meet this need.
Sirius Black’s Death Could Have Been So Much Sadder In The Harry Potter Movies
The Movies Could Have Made Sirius' Death More Meaningful
Sirius Black was played superbly by Gary Oldman in theHarry Pottermovies, but his death could have been far sadder than it was.Gary Oldman imbued Sirius with a soft, gentle melancholyand a certain maturity. This was welcome, but the script of the movies downplayedSirius' complexity and relationship with Harry. Granted, the movies' directors were faced with the mammoth task of adapting a huge amount of source material, but a few simple tweaks could have positioned Sirius as the godfather that Harry truly had.
Sirius' adventurousness and wild spirit were a huge part of his character in the books, and they helped build the idea of him as a doomed individual, difficult but full of life. The movie may have been right to cut some ofSirius' cruelty to Kreacherif it wasn’t determined to also add in the details that made Sirius lovable. However, the movies could have included more of what made Sirius flawed, because it also made him tragic. Sirius was floundering in the wake of his stint at Azkaban, depressed and irritable, but through it all, he and Harry grew to need each other, and this generated huge pathos when he died.
