Summary

Night Court’s newest star Wendie Malick has explained why her character, Julianne Walters, is suddenly a lawyer going into season 3 of the legal sitcom. Malick previously appeared as Julianne in the revival series, introduced as Dan’s ex-girlfriend and a former criminal intent on ruining his career through the legal system. While she’s only made guest appearances on the show so far,Night Courtseason 3will see her return as a full-fledged prosecutor, despite no prior mention of her having experience as a lawyer.

Speaking withTVLine, though, Malick revealed howseason 3 would make Julianne’s transition into a lawyer make sense for the story. The new star explained how a new program Abby will be involved with ties into the change, offering succinct reasoning for why this character change makes sense. Check out what Malick had to say about her new role below:

The magic of television! No, the way we’re explaining it is: There was a program called Operation Second Chance, and the only judge that applied for it was Abby.

[I]f your record has been expunged, you’re able to go back to whatever you did before, and apparently, I was a lawyer before I was sent to the slammer… So as long as I’m on my meds, I can practice law. I’m not going to be able to stay on my meds forever.

What Julianne’s New Role Means For Night Court Season 3

Aside from continuing her attempts at ruining Dan’s career, though, another potential avenue for her character is becoming a trusted lawyer alongside the rest of the team.

Now that Julianne is going to have a much more prominent role on thecast ofNight Court, it will no doubt lead to plenty of memorable moments surrounding her transition back into being a lawyer. While this information will no doubt offer whiplash for Abby and the others,it also indicates a more detailed, overarching story for her as season 3 progresses. With her now showing up as a main character in the upcoming episodes, there’s no telling what problems she’ll cause for the other main characters.

My Night Court Season 3 Casting Wish Just Came True

Night Court season 3 will replace one major star with a sitcom veteran, and I couldn’t be more excited to see how this impacts the revival’s story.

Aside from continuing her attempts at ruining Dan’s career, though, another potential avenue for her character is becoming a trusted lawyer alongside the rest of the team. While it would take some time for trust to build between her and the rest of the team, her return as a main character opens the door for a potential arc that can be explored throughout the season. Even though Malick hinted this might not be the case, it doesn’t need to be something that happens right away.

SinceNight Court’s upcoming cast exitsof both Olivia and Wyatt will impact the series greatly, it would make sense for more allies to become key parts of the story moving forward. This opens the door for a big character change for Julianne, something that could continue growing and shifting throughout the season. This would keep her storyline unpredictablewhile also delivering fresh material to the sitcom. No matter how her presence impacts the show, though, it’s sure to be a powerful part of the upcoming season regardless.

Night Courtseason 3 premieres on Tuesday, November 19 at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
