Meg Donnelly On Final Supergirl Performance In The Tomorrowverse

Screen Rant: Having gone through this whole trilogy now, what has that been like? Supergirl’s death is one of the most memorable deaths we’ve had in DC, so how was it tackling that for you as an actress?

Meg Donnelly: It was definitely really emotional. I think also being a part of these movies since 2019 before COVID to now, it was emotional wrapping up recording as Supergirl. Recording those scenes is definitely not easy, but also really fun at the same time, just knowing how iconic this comic is and I was honored to do that.

Did you during this process jump and read the originalCrisis on Infinite Earthsstory or did you do the film first and then read the source material?

Meg Donnelly: Yeah, this comic, especially the picture of Superman holding Supergirl, I’ve seen that my whole life just in pictures online, and in comic book stores. When I would go, they would just be everywhere, so I knew that picture and working with Butch and Wes who are in charge of my animation recording, they know so much about DC, every character and every, iteration of different characters. They were able to really tell me in detail about the different versions of the comics, and what this means for Supergirl, so I’m really grateful to them. So reading all of the different versions of the comics was really, really, really cool.

As we wrap up the Tomorrowverse, and who knows what will happen with DC animation, but having now gotten to do more voice acting, is that something you want to continue with, especially in this genre, because there’s so many characters that people can play.

Meg Donnelly: I would love to, yeah! I love doing voiceover and animation. It is so much fun and almost therapeutic in a way because you’re just in a booth and you can do whatever you want, or, however you’re interpreting it, because there’s no animation there. Which is really freeing and really cool and also doing all the fight scenes stuff, it’s just really fun. There’s just so many characters in DC that I would love to portray and I just love Supergirl so much. So if there’s any other versions of Supergirl as well, I would love to continue playing her, I am so open to it.

Auditioning As Supergirl For James Gunn’s DC Universe

On the subject of Supergirl, I cover the superhero beat forScreen Rant, and as someone who loves your Supergirl, I just wanted to see if you could talk about this because there were reports that supposedly we were almost going to see you maybe asSupergirl in live actionfor James Gunn. Was that true, and if so, how far did you get in that process?

Meg Donnelly: To play Supergirl has always been a dream of mine in any way, so the animation was incredible. When I heard talks of there being a live-action version in the DCU, I fought for the audition, like so much like it was just all I wanted and putting my energy towards. I ended up getting one and just the fact that they watched it and liked it, it’s just really surreal. I was able to go and screen test, do stunt work and scenes, it was really surreal and just really emotional that I got to do that.

It doesn’t feel real. The whole time, I was freaking out because it felt like a dream come true. Just being a little kid, I never thought that I would be able to do anything like this because I love superheroes and superhero movies so much. They ended up going in a different direction, which is totally fine, and I am so excited for the movie anyway; I’m such a big fan of James Gunn and his team. They’re just the nicest people in the world, so yeah, it was great. It was such an incredible experience that I just hold nothing but joy from.

I know your [The Winchesters] colleague Drake [Rodger] has talked a lot aboutwanting to play Nightwingso I’ve seen some fans chatter about maybe you could be the Batgirl to his Nightwing, is that something you would be up for?

Meg Donnelly: Yes! As literally anything, I’m such a huge fan of James Gunn and also what they’re doing with the DC Universe so any way I can be involved would just be incredible.

What’s Next After Portraying Supergirl In The Tomorrowverse

Besides promotingJustice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three, where can people see or hear your next?

Meg Donnelly: We just finished up doing Zombies 4 in New Zealand, which is so much fun, so I think that will probably come out next year. Then we’re doing an animated version of Zombies: The Reanimated Series, that was so much fun and really cool to do voiceover again, because I just love it. It’s really fun. I’ve also been working on music too, which is something that I’m also passionate about, so just a lot of exciting things to look forward to.

Before we wrap, what was the biggest takeaway for you to get to play Supergirl throughout these films?

Meg Donnelly: I think I always love playing her. I mean, obviously, because she’s a very iconic role. I feel like I relate to her in a lot of ways where all these really terrible things have been happening to her and then losing a lot of people that she loves, but she constantly chooses good. I think that’s what superheroes are. I feel like they do the impossible and they go through the impossible, but at the end of the day, they always choose the right thing to do. I just really admire her for that., so I think that’s definitely the biggest takeaway I’ve taken from playing her and it’s just been really fun.
