American Rusthas been cancelled once again after having been rescued by Prime Video for season 2. Created by Dan Futterman, and based on Philipp Meyer’s debut novel of the same name, the adaptation takes place in a small town. It follows the chief of police Del Harris as he takes on an investigation that finds the son of the woman he loves accused of murder. Now,Deadlineconfirms that Prime Video will not be moving forward withAmerican Rustseason 3, as the crime drama has been cancelled after two seasons. This ends the show’s long and shifting journey, which included getting cancelled by Showtime and moving over to Prime Video’s sibling service Freevee. It then made the jump to Prime Video, where all ten episodes of season 2 were released on March 28.

But the network ultimately passed, with the explanation being that producers couldn’t find a big star to lead the project. It would only air one season there, getting axed by Showtime the following January.No reason was given for the original cancellation, though some combination of budget and lower viewership are usually to blame.
The crime adaptation was poised for an expansion, with Luna Lauren Velez, Marc Menchaca, Nick Sandow, Britian Seibert, Christopher Denham, Amelia Workman, Leon Addison Brown, and Sara Lindsey all joining the series in its second installment.American Rustseason 2 also ends with a cliffhanger, with Del as one of the characters who was potentially shot and killed.
