Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episodes 1-5.With Dupli-Kate returning at the end ofInvincibleseason 2 and Multi-Paul being introduced in season 3, the Cha twins seem destined to play a big role going forward, and their origins have finally been explained. Kate Cha’s debut came in the very first season, with the superhero originally being part of Team Teen before joining the Guardians of the Globe. Despite her often cold and distant attitude, she remained a valuable member of the group but was seemingly killed off at the hands of the Lizard League untilInvincibleseason 2’s finale revealed Dupli-Kate was still alive.
Her shock survival was an example of how her abilities make her extremely hard to kill, and season 3 highlighted that her brother Paul may be just as elusive.Despite Mark murdering multiple duplicates of the villain in season 3’s premiere, Multi-Paul still had plenty of replicas alive, meaning he is every bit as durable as his twin sister. Still, there is plenty that the show has kept hidden about the Cha twins despite exploring the likes of Cecil andRex Splode’s origins inInvincible’slatest outing, but the franchise has offered some insight into their history and motivations.

Where Dupli-Kate & Multi-Paul Come From In Invincible
The Siblings Are Earth Born Heroes & Are The Descendants Of A Chinese Warlord
Despite having some ofInvincible’s most unique powers, Dupli-Kate and Multi-Paul’s backgrounds aren’t too out of the ordinary. They’re both from Earth and appear to have been born in America - or at least grew up there - but they also share Chinese heritage. One of their ancestors from several generations ago was a warlord who overthrew the Chinese Emperor, tying into how they got their powers. The duo grew up under government supervision after their father went insane at the sight of their abilities, eventually leading to them becoming superheroes as they got older, but their paths soon diverted.
Whereas Kate became amember of the Guardians of the Globe, Paul ditched the superhero game to take up a life of crime. Even though they both grew up together and shared a similar background, their journeys saw them take completely different directions, with Kate dedicating herself to saving people, as opposed to Paul, who was clearly impacted more by their troubling childhood. The government taking them in and raising them led to them essentially being weaponized, which explains why even Kate has a relatively apathetic personality, despite her status as one of Earth’s greatest heroes.

How Dupli-Kate & Multi-Paul’s Powers Work (& Why They Have Them)
The Duo Can Duplicate Themselves As A Result Of An Ancient Curse
As their names cleverly suggest, the Cha twins have the ability to multiply and duplicate themselves, but their powers aren’t so straightforward. Rather than simply making clones that they can easily sacrifice,Dupli-Kate and Multi-Paul’s copies are all conscious versions of themselves that share a telepathic connection. Each duplicate can think and feel, meaning every death takes a toll on the siblings, something Kate mentioned in season 2. As a result, Mark essentially murdered Multi-Paul numerous times in season 3’s premiere, and although the villain is still alive and well, losing multiple versions of himself will still hurt.
Their background makes Multi-Paul and Dupli-Kate’s story even more tragic, as they gained their powers as the result of an ancient Chinese curse.

Their background makes Multi-Paul and Dupli-Kate’s story even more tragic, as they gained their powers as the result of an ancient Chinese curse. After overthrowing the Chinese Emperor, a curse was placed on the duo’s ancestor that claimed “The seventh generation after Cha’s seventh grandchild would be burdened with a family too large to care for… and it would drive him mad.” Unfortunately, this was the fate that awaited Kate and Paul, as their mother died during childbirth and their father couldn’t handle the twins' ability, explaining the origins of their powers.
The government also experimented on the siblings after taking them into foster care to find out how they got their superpowers, but the scientists failed to find the source. While their copies can all do damage, the fact they can each individually die makes Dupli-Kate and Multi-Paul some ofInvincibleseason 3’s most tragic characters. Luckily, they learned to control their powers largely on their own and managed to use them for good originally, but Multi-Paul’s transition into villainy makes him a menacing opponent, purely because of his duplicating prowess, and the limitations of these abilities are still unknown.
Multi-Paul Is A Trusted Assassin Working For Mister Liu & The Order

After his confrontation with Mark and Rex, Multi-Paul was sent to prison, but his employer, Mister Liu, attempted to break him out. The crime boss runs an organization known as the Order, and he has been featured several times throughout the show already. Although the villain may be a minor antagonist, his first involvement in the series was actually a fight against Omni-Man, as he used his ability to turn into a dragon to go toe-to-toe with the Viltrumite. His organization also had an alliance with Machine Head, but Titan taking over the operation has since caused problems.
What Happens To The Guardians Of The Globe After Breaking Up In Invincible Season 3 (Do They Get Back Together?)
The Guardians of the Galaxy go through a pretty bad split in Invincible season 3, setting up two competing superhero teams that could reunite.
Season 1’s finale showed Liu and Titan preparing to fight, but their recent conversation suggests they reluctantly worked things out, asTitan’s return inInvincibleseason 3hints at him being the one to help try and break Multi-Paul out of prison. Ironically,Paul serves as Liu’s best assassin, which his powers don’t seem best suited to at first glance. Being able to duplicate himself indicates he would likely be loud and easy to spot, but these abilities may also be the perfect distraction, as one copy could divert his target’s attention while the other strikes.
Multi-Paul’s motivation for working with Liu and the Order remains unclear, but he is undoubtedly a valued part of the organization. While Mark and Oliver seemed to thwart the Order’s attempt to free Paul, the antagonist seems likely to return eventually as part of Liu’s crime syndicate, where his true intentions may finally be revealed.
How Dupli-Kate Comes Back To Life After Her Invincible Season 2 Death
Kate Always Keeps A Version Of Herself Hidden Away As A Contingency Plan
Dupli-Kate’s seemingly infinite number of copies has made her almost impossible to kill, but season 2 looked to have pulled the trigger. During the fight with the Lizard League, she appeared to be genuinely panicked as she ran out of replicas before the last version of her was killed, yet somehow, she came back. However, the explanation behind her survival is incredibly simple, asKate revealed she always kept a copy somewhere safe in case of an emergency, which came in handy given it was the only reason she survived season 2’s big fight.
Episode 8: “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up”
June 10, 2025
Considering she’s a superhero, it makes perfect sense that Kate would always keep a version of herself away from the action, guaranteeing her survival. Additionally, her decision to let her allies believe she was dead simply came from being burnt out with heroism, alongside trying to deal with the trauma of losing so many versions of herself. Kate’s return to the Guardians of the Globe inInvincibleseason 3 suggests she’s back to her duties, but with half the team leaving and Darkwing joining her, The Immortal, Shapesmith, and Black Samson, it’ll be interesting to see where her story goes.
