The problem first arose when Discord released an update that added support forAV1, a common compression codec. This update allowed users with GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs to stream high-quality game play over Discord Nitro. However, it quickly became apparent that the update was having an undesired effect on the performance of some NVIDIA GPUs.

In some instances, users reported that the performance of their memory clocks was throttled by around 200MHz. This is a big enough performance drop to have a noticeable effect on the GPU performance during game play.

NVIDIA acknowledged the problem and details of the patch in a tweet that was posted on the 3rd of February 2023.

What NVIDIA GPUs Are Affected by the Discord Bug?

It is not even clear at this stage whether the RTX 40 Series are among the affected models. There is conflicting information on whether this is the case.

How Do I Fix the GPU Problem With Discord?

The good news is that NVIDIA is rolling out an automatic fix that should resolve the problem without any user intervention. Surprisingly, this isn’t a patch to the GeForce driver. Rather, the patch is applied to the user profile.

If you are worried that the patch hasn’t been applied, then there are a couple of options that can help you to resolve the issue. The first option is to manually force the NVIDIA app to check for updates. The following steps detail this.

Your NVIDIA app will now check for updates and apply the patch if required.

The second method is a little more complicated and involves manually updating the user profile. This requires downloading the GeForce 3D Profile Manager.

The process will take around ten minutes to perform. A complete set of instructions can be found on theNVIDIA help pages.

Getting Discord Back to Top Speed

Any drop in GPU performance during game play is far from ideal. It is always a clever idea to kill as many unnecessary apps as possible before setting out on your next gaming adventure. This makes sure that resource-hungry processes are not affecting your GPU performance.

Bugs like this are common, and NVIDIA’s speed in acknowledging the problem and rolling out an update should keep user inconvenience to a minimum.
