Physical SIM cards from most service providers come locked by default. You need to enter a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to unlock and use them on your phone. When you enter the wrong PIN, you typically have two more attempts before the SIM card locks you out.
You’ll need a PUK (Personal Unlock Key) to unblock your SIM card and reset your PIN. A PUK is an eight-digit code that comes bundled with your SIM card alongside the PIN. Here’s how to locate it and regain access to your SIM card.

1. The SIM Card’s Plastic Packaging
Each new SIM card comes with a default four-digitSIM PINand a unique eight-digit PUK engraved on its plastic packaging. For this reason, you should always store away the packaging in a place you can easily remember.
But what if you lost the card or have no idea where you stored it? You can still find your PUK code using the following methods.
2. Contact Your Service Provider’s Customer Care
Most service providers can provide you with your PUK if you reach out to them. you’re able to call using an alternative number (if your phone is locked) or send an email. In most cases, you’d need to confirm your identity by providing some personal details.
Once they confirm your identity, you should receive your PUK instantly. Please note that you may have to get a new SIM card if you fail to prove that you are the owner of the blocked card.
3. Use Your Service Provider’s Online Service
If your provider offers their services online, you can log into their website or mobile app and try to locate your PUK. If you fail to find it, use their online customer care portal to ask for assistance.
If there’s no means of communication online, you’ll have to revert to contacting them as explained in the previous method.
What Happens If You Enter the Wrong PUK?
Entering the wrong PUK ten times in a row will block your SIM card permanently. In this case, you’ll need to get a new SIM card and ask your service provider to link it to your blocked card’s number.
Learn How to Regain Access to Your SIM Card
Unblocking your SIM card should be straightforward as long as you have the packaging that came with it in your possession. Alternatively, your service provider’s customer care should be able to help retrieve your PUK for you.
Insert the SIM card into your device, enter the PUK when prompted, create a new PIN, and your line should be operational again. If all fails, you may have to order a new SIM card and, in some cases, change your number altogether.
