Warning! Contains spoilers for Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent.

Summary

After becoming a hit onApple TV+, a new show has been renewed for season 2, and, interestingly, its season 2 plan makes it a worthy competitor toTrue Detective. WhenTrue Detectiveseason 1 first premiered on HBO in January 2014, it quickly rose in the ranks as one of the most critically acclaimed IPs on the network. The show also went on to win many awards for its incredibly brilliant writing, immersive cinematography, and compelling performances. Season 1’s success spawned season 2, which, unfortunately, could not even come close to matching its predecessor’s success.

Fortunately,True Detectivewas back in form with season 3, which did not match season 1 but still etched its own identity in the crime genre. The HBO show’s season 4 garnered a divisive response from viewers but earned big numbers on streaming and even landed in most critics' good books. With anotherTrue Detectiveseason confirmed, the HBO TV franchise’s popularity will likely keep growing from strength to strength. However, while it is at it,True Detectivemight also face stiff competition from an Apple TV+ show.

Presumed Innocent’s Renewal Plan Makes It Similar To True Detective

Presumed Innocent Is Seemingly Taking The Anthology Approach With Its Next Season

Even before the release of its finale,Apple TV+‘sPresumed Innocenthas been renewed for season 2. Given how the show’s overall reception has been positive, and it has also been commercially successful, its season 2 confirmation is not surprising. However, what makes its season 2 return interesting is that as per reports (viaDeadline),it “will unfold around a suspenseful, brand-new case.”With a brand-new case driving its overarching storyline in season 2,Presumed Innocentwill seemingly take an anthology approach, similar toTrue Detective.

FollowingTrue Detectiveseason 2’s format,Presumed Innocent’s next installment could follow a new set of characters embroiled in a brand-new murder mystery case.

Colin Farrell in True Detective season 2

AsPresumed Innocent’s season 2 plan suggests, it will likely unfold in a completely different setting and follow the lives of new law enforcer characters. LikeTrue Detectiveseason 1, which features Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as its leads,Presumed Innocent’s first installment also stars big names like Bill Camp and Jake Gyllenhaal as its primary law enforcers. FollowingTrue Detectiveseason 2’s format,Presumed Innocent’s next installment could follow a new set of characters embroiled in a brand-new murder mystery case.

Presumed Innocent’s Season 2 Could Achieve What True Detective Season 2 Couldn’t

Presumed Innocent Season 2 Can Be Better Than Season 1

Presumed Innocentseason 1 walks through a gripping murder mystery and perfectly keeps viewers glued to its courtroom and family drama by presenting several red herrings and intriguing clues. It also features brilliant performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Camp, Ruth Negga, and Peter Sarsgaard, further immersing viewers in its tense and captivating crime narrative. However, unlikeTrue Detectiveseason 1, it does not capture lighting in a bottle, which leaves some scope for it to improve in season 2.

AlthoughTrue Detectiveseason 2 has many issues, it was primarily weighed down by the expectation that it would be as good (if not better) as its predecessor. Every subsequent season of the HBO series has struggled with the same issue becauseTrue Detectiveseason 1 set the bar a little too high. Apple TV+‘sPresumed Innocent, in contrast, has more room to evolve with season 2 and other potential future installments because season 1 is not perfect.

Will Jake Gyllenhaal Be In Presumed Innocent Season 2?

Gyllenhaal’s Involvement Depends On Season 2’s Story & Setting

Since it has been confirmed thatPresumed Innocentseason 2 will focus on a new case, Jake Gyllenhaal’s involvement could depend on several factors. For instance, if the second season adds a new layer to the murder from season 1 by killing off another main character, season 2 could mark Gyllenhaal’s return as Rusty Sabich. The story would then continue, following Rusty Sabich’s hunt for new answers surrounding a new murder mystery that could make or break his career as a lawyer.

The Apple TV+ show’s second installmentcould also unfold in the same universe where Jake Gyllenhaal’s Rusty and Bill Camp’s Raymond could team up againto prove another man’s innocence who, like Rusty, has gotten himself embroiled in a crime of passion. However, all this would depend on the verdict of Carolyn Polhemus’ murder case inPresumed Innocent’s season 1. If the verdict concludes Rusty is innocent, the Gyllenhaal character could return. If it does not, however, the character would be behind bars.

SincePresumed Innocentseason 1 will mostly have a well-rounded story, it would also make more sense for season 2 to have its own standalone story.

However, given how season 2 will revolve around a new case, it seems likely it will introduce a new set of characters. TheTrue Detectiveapproach would also work well forPresumed Innocentseason 2, allowing it to replace Jake Gyllenhaal with another big name. SincePresumed Innocentseason 1 will mostly have a well-rounded story, it would also make more sense for season 2 to have its own standalone story.

What To Expect From Presumed Innocent Season 1’s Finale

Presumed Innocent Season 1’s Finale Will Reveal The Real Killer

Since the Presumed Innocent show’s storyline has drifted away from the 1990 movie and the original book, it’s hard to predict what twists the show’s finale has in store. However, since season 2 will mark the inception of a new case, season 1’s ending will reveal the identity of Carolyn’s killer. If it is not Rusty, the defendants will win the case, but if the jury concludes he is the murderer, Molto will reap the benefits of being the prosecutor. Regardless of what happens, it would interesting to see how theApple TV+show’s season 1 ending will resolve its mysteries and set upTrue Detective-styled season 2.

Presumed Innocent season 1’s finale will be released on Apple TV+ on July 24.
