Everything We Expect Apple to Announce at WWDC 2023

The 2023 edition of the Worldwide Developers Conference is confirmed to go live on June 5th, 2023. The event has served as a launchpad for Apple software and hardware—in recent times—and we expect it to follow a similar trend once again. The announcements at WWDC 2022, which generated many headlines due to the revamped iOS 16 Lock Screen and the redesigned M2 MacBook Air, have us excited about what’s in store for 2023. Here we dive into the rumors and state what we expect to see at WWDC 2023.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17

In 2022, the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 software updates brought significant changes to the iPhone and iPad. Apple showed an increased focus on personalization in iOS 16, whereas iPadOS 16 worked to improve andmake multitasking on iPad more efficientwithStage Manager. But alongside these feature upgrades, many users reported stability issues with the software versions.

In the past, Apple dealt with such updates by introducing tuneup releases—iOS 12 is the most notable example—which focused on improving the overall quality of the user experience. While we expect iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 to take a similar route, Mark Gurman hinted at the updates bringing “user-requested features” in a tweet:

The macOS Big Sur (macOS 11) update visually overhauled the operating system in 2020, adding a new translucent aesthetic to all windows and bringing new icons. Since then, every macOS update has been about improving the productivity experience and seamless functionality that Apple is known to deliver.

The current version—macOS Ventura—added standout features like Stage Manager andContinuity Camera, alongside Handoff for FaceTime. Now, the latter two further showcase the integration between Apple devices, and we expect to see more of that with the 2023 version upgrade.

If Apple decides to bring user-requested features to the Macs, we hope to see them build out widgets more, allowing users to pin them onto the large canvas of their desktop.

watchOS 10 and tvOS 17

The last of Apple’s operating platforms that we expect will see version upgrades are watchOS and tvOS. Like macOS, 2022 was kind to these two platforms. Users didn’t report many glitches, and Apple consistently added features, improving the user experience.

The most recent addition to tvOS is a feature that can dim flashing lights within a video sequence, helping users cope with sudden fluctuations in brightness. The platform also saw the introduction ofApple Music Singwhen tvOS 16.2 launched. We hope Apple adds more unique features like these with tvOS 17.

In 2022, Apple provided more fitness statistics to users with watchOS 9 and introduced hiking-friendly features like waypoints. It also launched the Apple Watch Ultra, a wearable more geared towards individuals who tackle the pinnacle of sporting experiences. For watchOS 10, we hope Apple develops its fitness statistics readouts more and improves sleep tracking by not limiting it to the window when Bedtime Mode is active.

Apple VR Headset

Thelong-rumored Apple VR headsetis a product that has been garnering a lot of attention despite leaving its interested patrons in the dark. While there are many reports about its hardware—which will ideally integrate with other Apple products—there’s still a lot unknown about the device and its functionality.

Nevertheless, an unveiling at WWDC 2023, alongside technical sessions for developers, might pave the way for some great use cases, which can help Apple justify the hefty $3000 price tag this device is rumored to carry.

Mac Pro and 15-Inch MacBook Air

Since the Apple silicon processors made their way to market and shocked everyone with the performance on offer, many have been looking forward to seeing an updated Mac Pro. The device’s larger form factor means Apple can pack a lot of power into it. The Mac Studio has already given us a glimpse of what Apple can achieve with some extra space, and we expect the Mac Pro to take this a step further.

Another Apple silicon-powered device we expect to see at WWDC 2023 is the heavily rumored 15-inch MacBook Air, which might even feature the M3 processor. Not everyone needs the MacBook Pro, but many can benefit from a larger screen.

Currently, the only large-screen option is the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Therefore, this 15-inch variant will fit perfectly into Apple’s lineup, giving those who want more from their device a viable option.

WWDC 2023 Might Offer New Hardware Alongside Software

At its core, WWDC is and will always be a software-first event, but seeing hardware launches during the keynote isn’t surprising anymore. We feel the event is worth keeping tabs on, as it’s the first major Apple event of 2023, plus it will help you stay in the know about the latest devices and software upgrades to come.
