Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtreeis full of boss fights, hidden and obvious alike, but no monster is quite as unsettling as Metyr, Mother of Fingers. This monstrosity is huge, made up of fingers, arms, and a tail, and she comes at you like a freight train. If you’re having trouble taking her down, there are a few things you should keep an eye out for in her fight.

Metyr has two phases to her fight and two distinct styles of fighting in each one. Before worrying about that, you should ensure your build is up to snuff for her fight. It’s recommended that you reach Scadutree Blessing 10 to 12before taking her on and using a weapon likeRivers of Blood that focuses on Bleedor Stagger will really help you out. Once you’re ready, head towards the Cathedral of Maus Metyr in Scadu Altus to find her.

Finding Miquella’s crosses is an important part of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, but the game never explains what’s in it for the player.

Metyr, Mother of Fingers: Boss Fight Guide Phase 1

Mostly Physical Attacks, With Some Spells to Watch Out For

While Metyr’s first phase is the beginning of the fight, it’s by no means easier than phase two. There are many attacks to watch out for, so there’s no one strategy to use when approaching her fight. To see each one in action, check outFextralife’s video on YouTube.

Like any boss inElden Ring, you must usea build that fits your playstyle. That being said,Metyr is the least threatening when you stay in front of her.Metyr’s side legs have a few devastating attacks that do a lot of damage, so stay in front of her so that you can more easily swing on the large gash on her chest; this is her weak spot, and attacking her here will make her fight go by faster.

Having a good shield and/or counter is pretty helpful for staying close to her longer, but if you’re a fan of power-stancing any of thepowerful katanas inShadow of the Erdtree, you’ll need to play carefully.

The first attack you’ll see from her is her large laser attack. Her eye will begin to glow, and she’ll shoot out a large beam at you.you’re able to avoid this attack by simply rolling through it, as with any attack in the game.

Metyr will continue to use this attack as the fight continues, even when you’re up close, so keep an eye out for any glowing that might indicate she’s about to blast you.

From time to time, Metyr will rip open the gash on her chest and release a few Fingercreeps into the battle. They’re annoying but not a huge threat as long as you take care of them. Try out some of thestrongest spells inElden Ringto take them out fast.

As for the rest of her phase one attacks,Metyr will bodyslam, headbutt, and throw projectiles at you from the air.Her bodyslam attack is pretty apparent; she’ll place her hands on her chest, then lift her entire front end into the air before slamming it back down on you.

You can tell she’s about to drop once you see her take her hands off her chest.Once the attack is done, there’s a short window for you to attack her weak spot here.

Metyr’s headbutt attack is her most common attack to use when you’re further away from her.She puts her hands on the ground and walks slowly for a few steps, then swings her head into the air and jumps at you with a head slam. Dodge into her as her head makes an impact to avoid the attack.

Be careful! Sometimes, Metyr will follow up the headbutt with one or two jumping slam attacks, so you can’t always get away with doing damage here. Keep an eye on her body language, and don’t attack if it looks like she’s going to jump again.

Her final slam attack is the biggest but relatively easy to dodge. She’ll jump all the way into the air, release a bunch of fingerlike projectiles, and then slam back down on top of you. Dodge as you would any other attack, and then head right back to her weak spot for a swing or two. Often, she’ll follow this attack with a large sweeping beam attackthat can be dodged by rolling into and through it.

Metyr also has a few melee-range attacks to watch out for:

What to Watch Out For

Swipe

She swipes with her left and then right hand, which you can block or dodge through.

Hand Slam

She raises both hands and then slams them down on you, then slams them three more times, twice in quick succession and then a third time after a delay.

Finger Attack

Metyr raises up the fingers under her chest and then hits you with them. This attack looks a lot like the small bodyslam attack, so pay close attention to how high her body rises.

Metyr turns slightly, then slams her elbow down.

Leg Jab

She will jab at you with one of her many legs.

Leg Kicks

Metyr approaches you from the side, kicking at you with her legs. This attack is super easy to get tangled up in and will kill you if you’re not careful, so stay away from her flanks.

Finally, to wrap up the phase one discussion, you’ll need to know the few spells Metyr uses in phase one. The biggest one is a huge explosion, whereMetyr will wrap her arms around herself before placing her eye on the ground. This attack doesn’t hit right next to Metyr, so if you’re close enough, run up to her as you see her charge it. If you’re too far away, find an area that glows blue, not pink, to avoid the attack.

Now Things Get Magical; Stand Your Ground, Tarnished

Once you hit phase two of the fight,Metyr will crouch to the ground and charge up, then release a burst of energy that will knock you down.Once you get knocked down, stay down until you see Metyr float into the air and release a pink flash of light.Once you know that light, do a “dodge getup” to avoid the blast she sends out.

Though you can dodge the burst attack, it doesn’t do that much damage, so it’s completely viable to keep attacking her instead of dodging.

Phase Two mostly has the same attacks as Phase One but with some modifications and new spells. Her beam attack now shoots three beams instead of two and can no longer be dodged or rolled through because of their spacing.Instead, sprint to the left or right to avoid them. If you want to emulate Metyr’s spell-slinging style, try aFAITH or INT build.

One new spell Metyr uses is a magical minefield that she puts down. The orb above Metyr’s tail will glow as she floats off the ground, and then she will summon orbs of magic that damage you if you touch them.Run out of the “minefield” and prepare to attack. This attack is more annoying than anything; as long as you’re careful, it should be easy to escape.

Metyr also pulls out a new slam attack in phase two, and it’s much meaner than the ones from phase one. She floats high into the air for this attack and spins in place. After a second, she’ll fly towards you, slam down, and then slide towards you, still spinning.

You’ll take damage if she hits you with any part of the spinning attack, and a shield can’t block it.

Even if you’re notpower stancing any ofElden Ring’s powerful weapons, your only option is to avoid the hit. Run as soon as you see her begin floating. As she flies towards you, change your course slightly to angle away from her, then dodge roll at the last second. This will allow you to stay close while avoiding all the damage from that attack.

The last thing you need to watch out for is Metyr’s “ultimate:” a large black hole that causes the surrounding ground to deal damage you while a huge laser fires out of the hole at you, sweeping a circle around Metyr twice. The best way to avoid this laser is to run towards it when you see it, slipping in between the small gap between the laser and the ground right next to Metyr.

If you’re too far away to hit the gap, you’ll need to shield and tank the damage as the laser passes, then run towards the gap for the second time it sweeps around.

Once you’ve defeated Metyr, Mother of Fingers, you’ll receiveRemembrance of the Mother of Fingersand 420,000 runes. The Remembrance can be sold or consumed for 30,000 Runes or traded to Enia for one of two weapons: the Staff of the Great Beyond or Gazing Finger. The Gazing Finger is a colossal weapon, likeElden Ring’s Ringed Finger, but scales well and can do incredible damage with the right build.
