What Despicable Me 4’s Box Office Says About Despicable Me 5 Chances
Despicable Me 5’s Prospects Are Looking Good
Illumination would have ample interest in continuing theDespicable Mefranchise if they could indeed come up with a quality story. As it stands, theDespicable Memovies(of which there are now six, includingMinionsandMinions: The Rise of Gru) are the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time. At the time of writing, the franchise has made over $4.6 billion in total, and will likely cross the record-breaking $5 billion mark afterDespicable Me 4’s lifetime gross is added. If it does so, the Illumination series will be the first animated franchise to cross $5 billion.
Despicable Me 4 Is Almost Guaranteed To Break An Incredible $5 Billion Franchise Record
Despicable Me 4 is on the way, and the sixth overall entry in the Despicable Me franchise could break a massive animation record at the box office.
Despicable Me 4’s instant box office success makes thechances for aDespicable Me 5seem even more likely. The fourth movie opened to $75 million for their 3-day total, with a cumulative domestic total of $122.6 million. While this total is the lowest opening gross for any franchise film sinceDespicable Me 2, this sum still put itat the top of the box office for its opening weekend, usurping Pixar’s returning favoriteInside Out 2.

At the time of writing,Despicable Me 4’s worldwide box office total sits at $240.4 million, which is an impressive sum in advance of the film’s second weekend. If the animated film continues on this positive trend, the fate ofDespicable Me 5seems all but sealed. As Renaud mentions, Illumination can hopefully couple this desire for financial gain with deep regard for a quality story that expands the lore of the franchise.
