Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Cobra Kai season 6 part 1!
Summary
Cobra Kaishowrunner Jon Hurwitz has explained why Hawk’s new hair is cut like the American flag in season 6 part 1, revealing the intention of his new hairstyle. DuringCobra Kaiseason 6 part 1, the Miyagi-Do student styles his mohawk after the American flag for the Sekai Taikai tournament, prepared to fight for his team in the international championship. However, in episode 4, he ends up getting knocked out, a funny moment contrasting the hype he built up using his hairstyle before the fight.
Speaking withCollider,Hurwitz explained why Hawk had hair resembling the American flag inCobra Kaiseason 6 part 1, and how it tied into him losing his fight. The showrunner explained the importance of it representing his team in the Sekai Taikai, but also how he seemingly did it for nothing given he was knocked out so quickly. Check out what Hurwitz had to say below:

[Laughs] With the American flag mohawk? You know what? We’re at the Sekai Taikai, our team is the sole American team, and we wanted them to kind of enter a little bit as the ugly Americans in a certain way. You know, flaunting it out there, Johnny behaving the way he does. It was also just to make it where it was seemingly a foregone conclusion that Hawk’s gonna be along for the ride so that in Episode 4, when he gets knocked out, he had that mohawk for nothing, at least seemingly.
How Hawk Getting Knocked Out Sets Up Cobra Kai’s Sekai Taikai
Hawk getting knocked out in episode 4 shows just how unpredictable the Sekai Taikai is going to beas the show moves forward with the championship proper. Thecast ofCobra Kaimay struggle against their upcoming adversaries, including the new team run by Kreese and Kim, needing to think outside the box when it comes to how they’ll approach the martial arts competition. Since the dedicated character was already defeated, it goes to show just how much harder everyone will need to train if they want to win.
However,Kreese’s new students inCobra Kainow include Tory, who joined his team at the end of season 6 part 1 following the death of her mother. With Hawk’s performance possibly not being up to par coupled with a lost member,it’s unclear how Johnny and Daniel will be able to bring Miyagi-Do to victory. The student’s defeat so early on feels like a bad omen, one the team has to overcome by working together if they want to bring their all to the competition.
However, with two parts left inCobra Kaiseason 6, the tide could still turn for Miyagi-Do as the team does their best to win the competition. This means the next ten episodes are going to be crucial for the series, with plenty of twists and turns for all its characters, likely including Hawk. With plenty of ways the show could go now that the contest is taking center stage, Johnny and Daniel’s students are going to have critical roles to play as the series' curtain call begins.
Cobra Kaiseason 6 part 2 arrives on Netflix on June 22, 2025.
