Will Chris Evans Ever Hold Another Major Role In The MCU?
Avengers: Endgame Seemingly Ended His Tenure As Captain America
This surprise cameo appearance inDeadpool & Wolverine, as well as his positive reaction to the opportunity, raises questions about whether Evans will ever appear in another major role in anupcoming MCU movie. There would appear to beseveral upcoming golden opportunities for this to happen, beginning withCaptain America: Brave New World, a sequel following Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking on the hero’s mantle that is set to premiere on August 24, 2025. The next would be the Jul 20, 2025 release ofThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is set to feature Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm.
However, MCU precedent would seem to show thatEvans may not reprise either of his roles in those 2025 movies. Captain America did not appear in theBrave New WorldpredecessorThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier. There is also the matter that John Krasinski played Fantastic Four character Reed Richards during a cameo appearance inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of the Madnessbut the role will be filled by Pedro Pascal in the upcoming movie. While Krasinski and Evans could both similarly cameo in theupcomingFantastic Four, that possibility remains to be seen.

The remaining heroes in the upcomingFantastic Fourmovie are the Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby) and The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
However, post-Deadpool & Wolverine,Evans' schedule may prevent him from taking on such a major role. He has several upcoming projects in various stages of development including the Christmas action comedyRed One, in which he will star opposite Dwayne Johnson and J.K. Simmons. He is also set to play a major role in the star-studdedSacrifice, which is currently in pre-production with Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault, and Brendan Fraser also set to appear.
Will Chris Evans Return For Avengers 5 & 6?
The MCU Has Set A Precedent For The Captain America Star’s Return
Though the immediate future will likely not include the return of Chris Evans, there is a possibility that he could make an appearance in an MCU movie that is further down the line. The most likely candidates would be the blockbuster crossoversAvengers: Doomsday, due July 05, 2025, andAvengers: Secret Wars, due August 06, 2025.The upcomingAvengersmovies have already set a precedent for Evans' possible returnwith the recent announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the franchise.
What Is Doomsday? Avengers 5 Title & Story Clues Explained
The title of Avengers 5 was confirmed as Avengers: Doomsday at SDCC 2024, begging the question of whether the title holds any deeper meaning.
Downey Jr., whose character Iron Man was central to the first three MCU phases, is set to take on a new role as the villain Doctor Doom inDoomsdayandSecret Wars. His salary for both movies is reportedly “significantly more” than $80 million, which may preclude the studio from bringing on another member from their previous A-list talent pool in addition to the already massiveAvengerscast. However, the return of more original stars could propel the newAvengersmovies to record-breaking heights, making Evans' price tag worth it in the face of recent theatrical flops likeThe Marvels.
How Avengers: Secret Wars Can Properly Wrap Up Chris Evans' Marvel Tenure
Johnny Storm Deserves More Than He’s Gotten So Far
It seems likely that, should Evans appear in thenewAvengersmovies, he would be playing a role other than Captain America. The character’s arc has already been completedas of 2019’sAvengers: Endgame, which saw him return to his own time and live a life that allowed him to grow old with his longtime love Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Pulling him back into the fray could eliminate that happy ending, so it seems like it would potentially be more narratively satisfying to see The Human Torch return inDoomsdayorSecret Warsinstead.
Chris Evans originated the role of The Human Torch in live-action film, though the character has also been played by Jay Underwood in an unreleased 1994 adaptation and Michael B. Jordan in the critically panned 2015 movieFantastic Four.
Additionally, now that Chris Evans' version of Johnny Storm has been canonized in the MCU,he deserves a proper sendoff. HisDeadpool & Wolverinecameoleft him in a slightly grim place, in a similar manner to the grisly death meted out to John Krasinski’s Reed Richards inMultiverse of Madness. It would provide much better closure to the star’s early role if his version of Johnny Storm could return for a final time to help defeat the iconic Fantastic Four villain once and for all.
