One originalChicago PDcharacter stepped up to the plate andtook Hailey Upton’s place as a detective in the Intelligence Unit in season 12.However, Hank Voight should be worried about their promotion digging up things from the past. Jason Beghe’sChicago PDseason 12 charactercertainly isn’t the same person he was four years ago, but his old self might come back to haunt him with Upton gone and someone else replacing her on the team.

TheOne Chicagouniverse returns on Wednesday, June 30, 2025, withChicago Medseason 10, episode 9, “No Love Lost,” airing at 8 pm ET,Chicago Fireseason 13, episode 9, “A Favor,” at 9 pm ET, andChicago PDseason 12, episode 9, “Friends and Family,” at 10 pm ET.

Tracy Spiridakos' Upton leftChicago PDafter the season 11 finale to get a fresh start. Once Jay Halstead was gone and he and Upton got a divorce, she needed to start anew, and Voight knew that. So, he encouraged Upton to leave Intelligence and the city, meaning there was an open spot for a detective on the team. TheChicago PDseason 12 premiere revealed thatEmily Martel, a detective Adam Ruzek knew from the police academy, took Upton’s place. The seat would soon be vacated again when Martel died in episode 1, but someone familiar soon stepped up and became Upton’s permanent replacement.

Kim Burgess Effectively Replaces Hailey Upton In Intelligence

Burgess Is Promoted In Chicago PD Season 12

It was only right that one of the threeoriginalChicago PDcharacters (Kim Burgess, Kevin Atwater, and Adam Ruzek) took Upton’s spotin the Intelligence Unit in season 12. They had been officers for years, and it was time that at least one of them got a promotion.Chicago PDseason 12, episode 6 revealed that Burgess would be the one succeeding Uptonafter she put in the work to (finally) become a detective during “Pawns.”

Charlie Reid

Just like that,Burgess officially replaced Upton inChicago PDseason 12. However, her new job title isn’t the only way Marina Squerciati’s character has stepped into Upton’s shoes.Burgess' whole demeanor has changed this season. She is trying to be the best detective she can be, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, even if that means being away from Intelligence (which Burgess was willing to do until Chief Charlie Reid assigned her to her original team).

Jay Halstead’s Return Will Only Ruin Chicago PD, Even If Jesse Lee Soffer Wants To Come Back

Jesse Lee Soffer has settled into his new role in FBI: International but hasn’t ruled out a Halstead return in Chicago P.D., which can be problematic.

Voight Almost Murdered Roy Walton

Reid seemingly putBurgess back on Intelligence after her detective promotion inChicago PDseason 12for his own benefit, but it’s unclear what his exact motives were/are. Perhaps Reid wants Burgess to owe him, and he can cash in by getting her to feed him intel on Voight. If that’s the case,Voight should be worried about Roy Walton’s death coming back to haunt him.

Upton shot and killed Roy, and Voight got rid of his body to protect Upton (and himself, of course).

As some might remember, Upton stopped Voight from killing Roy out of cold blood after he tortured him during theChicago PDseason 8 finale. However, Roy got his hands on Voight’s gun. To stop him, Upton shot and killed Roy, and Voight got rid of his body to protect Upton (and himself, of course).Roy’s murder was the last one Voight covered up,and with everything that has happened inChicago PDseason 12, with Burgess' promotion and Reid’s confusing schemes, perhaps Burgess will learn the truth about Roy and be forced to tell the chief.
