The Darkness Falls quest inAssassin’s Creed Shadowstakes Naoe and Yasuke to the Yamato region to find the Wise, one of the higher-levelmembers of the Shinbakufu. Per usual, Naoe and Yasuke don’t actually know the character’s identity at first, but this is also a case where a bit of investigation won’t simply reveal a clear answer. Like the early Golden Teppo quest, Darkness Falls ultimately comes down to the choice toaccuse one individual of being the Wise — Joken Hokkyo, Tsutsui Junkei, or Akiyami Ayako.
Warning: The following article includes spoilers for the Darkness Falls quest inAssassin’s Creed Shadows.

Tsutsui Junkei lead two different groups in Yamato, and both have an active interest in gaining effective control of the region. Joken Hokkyo, meanwhile, is a monk who serves as the mediator in peace talks to avoid an all-out war between the factions. Junkei comes across as self-centered and unlikable, Ayako seems naturally militant, and Hokkyo’s seeming innocence comes under fire as Naoe and Yasuke learn more about him, so there could be reasonable justification to pin the blame on any of them.
What Happens If You Accuse Joken Hokkyo
The Monk Is The Right Target
Hokkyo ultimately seems like the most obvious culprit, as some artifacts found at the temple suggest that there’s more to the monk than he lets on. His insistence on providing a recess during the peace talks also seems to push both Junkei and Ayako further away from their confidence in a treaty, casting doubt on his actual interest in obtaining one.Choosing to accuse Hokkyo reveals that he is, in fact, the Wise, a fact that he betrays when catching a blade that Yasuke hurls directly at his face.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review: A Gorgeous Japan That Plays It Too Safe
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is easy on the eyes, but a generally basic simulation, scant upgrades, and bland side activities weaken the effect.
After the revelation, Hokkyo will turn the temple into a scene of battle, ordering his monks to attack. He flees the scene himself, buthe can then be chased down and brought to justice, marking off another completed target among the Shinbakufu. Accomplishing the task also givesAssassin’s Creed Shadows' Yamato regionmore hope for a peaceful future.

What Happens If You Accuse Tsutsui Junkei
A False Accusation Has No Real Consequences
While accusing Junkei might seem like a major misstep, events ultimately play out similarly. Hokkyo quickly backs up the accusation, calling Junkei a “traitor” and bemoaning his deception. As both Junkei and Ayako’s warriors draw blades, however, the mysterious figure Kojiri inserts himself into the situation to call Yasuke a fool and tell him to throw his blade at Hokkyo. Yasuke follows suit, revealing Hokkyo as The Wise and starting the same scene of conflict.
What Happens If You Accuse Akiyami Ayako
Kojiri Still Keeps Things On Track
Considering the similarity between accusing Hokkyo and Junkei, the sequence of events that occurs when accusing Ayako is fairly predictable. Hokkyo takes the same opportunity to leap on the idea of Ayako’s deception, then Kojiri demands Yasuke throw his blade at Hokkyo. From that point onward, the same sequence of events plays out, resulting once again in Hokkyo’s ultimate death and the progression of the overall Shinbakufu quests.
You Should Accuse Joken Hokkyo In Darkness Falls
It’s Safe To Ignore Canon On This One
There’s ultimately no reason to accuse anyone but Joken Hokkyoin Darkness Falls. While it’s certainly not worth reloading a save file after accusing someone else, Hokkyo is the right answer, and the alternative possibilities aren’t interesting enough to make the wrong choice potentially worthwhile. The scene plays out more naturally without Kojiri’s intervention, as it’s hard to believe that Yasuke would risk the accidental murder of a monk according to Kojiri’s unexplained whims without already feeling confident that Hokkyo was the culprit.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Complete Choices Guide
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has several pivotal choices that change the outcome of its plot and the fate of its characters. Here’s how to resolve them.
That being said,Yasuke actually accuses Junkei in Canon Mode, so choosing Hokkyo technically isn’t the canon version of the story. It makes sense that Yasuke would leap to indict the character he sees as having betrayed Nobunaga’s ideals, but considering the obvious clues pointing to Hokkyo and the suspension of disbelief required when he follows Kojiri’s suggestion, it’s ultimately an odd choice for Canon Mode. Although there aren’t long-term narrative consequences, a false accusation also seems like it could only be detrimental to peace in the region.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’Canon Modewas created after the game’s story was already designed, so it merely represents an interesting path chosen through the game’s events rather than an absolutely definitive story.
Regardless, the choice in Darkness Falls doesn’t end up being one of the more important ones in the game. Navigating romances and choosing whether to kill or spare certain targets ultimately matter more than levying the accusation at the wrong individual here, so Kojiri certainly seems like a handy figure to have around to keep Yasuke on track inAssassin’s Creed Shadows.
