FromMonty Pythonand Edgar Allan Poe toBlade RunnerandDark Souls, there are lots of fun hidden surprises to bring a smile to those who spot them.
Fallouthas always had a great sense of humor, with Easter eggs popping up in the games from the very beginning, andFallout 4is no exception. Along withreturning characters fromFallout 3,Fallout 4has plenty of references to movies, books, and even other Bethesda games for the eagle-eyed to find. While there are far too many to include them all, here are some of the funniest Easter eggs to hunt during anyFallout 4playthrough.

One Random Fallout 4 Encounter Is Hilarious If You Have The Right Stats
Fallout 4 has a lot of great random encounters to find but one in particular can have a very funny ending so long as the player has the right stats.
10Prost Bar - Location
Reference To Cheers
Being set in Boston,Fallout 4leans heavily on the history of the city and its role in American history. However, there is also a reference to Boston’s place in pop culture history that some younger fans might not immediately spot. On the edge of Boston Common, on the other side of the fence from Swan’s Pond, and down a short set of stairs is the Prost Bar.This is an Easter egg for the 1980s TV showCheers, as Prost is German for cheers.
The bar’s interior is laid out almost exactly like the bar in the show, which was set in Boston starring Ted Danson and Shelley Long. Sat at one end of the bar are two skeletons, one wearing a mail carrier uniform, which arereferences to the two barfly characters, Cliff and Norm, who would sit in that spot in the show. The final major part of this Easter egg is in the office, where several baseball grenades can be found, which refers to the past of Danson’s character, who played for the Boston Red Sox.

9World Of Refreshment - Location
Reference To Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
In theNuka-WorldDLC, the Sole Survivor can venture into the park’s World of Refreshment. This nukalurk-infested ride bears astriking resemblance to the chocolate river from Roald Dahl’sCharlie and the Chocolate Factory. In its heyday, the ride would have seen visitors to the park sailing along a river of Nuka-World’s product, just as Willy Wonka did in the book. Sadly, Nuka-World’s best days are long behind it, and all the Sole Survivor can do is wade through the murky Nuka Quantum to explore.
While in the novels and film adaptations, Wonka’s chocolate river is a way to get from one point to another in his massive factory, Nuka-World’s version was a full ride. As the Sole Survivor battles past the nukalurks, they will find different themed sections, such as a city, a western area, and the bottling plant. There is even a terminal that has an entry mentioning that guests are encouraged to drink from the river, a cheeky wink at the source where the children were told not to touch the chocolate.

8Knight-Captain Cade - Dialogue
Reference To Star Trek: Voyager
If the Sole Survivorjoins the Brotherhood of Steel inFallout 4, then they will get access to lots of resources like unique armor, radiant quests, and medical assistance. This assistance comes in the form of Knight-Captain Cade, the chief medical officer aboard the Prydwen, who can be found on the ship’s main deck. Voiced by Dwight Schultz, who has starred inStar Trekas Reginald Barclay,Cade has a funStar Trek: VoyagerEaster egg as one of his greetings.
When greeting the Sole Survivor for a check-up, there is a chance Cade will say"Please state the nature of your medical emergency.“This is almost the same default greeting ofVoyager’s EMHwhenever he was activated. Cade can be met as part of the quest"Tour of Duty"as the Sole Survivor meets all the senior officers aboard the Brotherhood ship.

The same quote is also used by Medics inStarCraftas a reference toVoyager.
7Robert MacCready - Dialogue
Reference To Ghostbusters
Traveling with companions is a big part of what makesFallout 4so much fun, as well as offering extra carry capacity. Hearing their comments during quests and in certain locations adds life to the world and gives insight into their characters. And there isone particular line from MacCready that is bound to makeGhostbustersfans chuckle.
When exploring the Boston Library with MacCready, the Sole Survivor will encounter super mutants and the protectron guards of an ill-fated expedition. When entering the large hall where the team made their last stand, MacCready says,“Let’s be careful. No human being would possibly pile books this way.”This is a play onBill Murray’s line in the 1984 movie during the Ghostbuster’s trip to the New York Public Libraryand adds a little humor to an otherwise bleak area.
6Bradburton Bonfire - Location
Reference To Dark Souls
When exploring the town of Bradburton outside Nuka-World, the Sole Survivor can enter a destroyed house on the town’s southern road. There they will find a Chinese Officer Sword sticking out of a pile of smoldering embers. This is a very on-the-nose reference to FromSoftware’sDark Soulsand its bonfires, which allow healing and fast travel in the atmospheric series.
The bonfire is directly to the right of the front door when entering the house, with some sort of shrine above it. When first encountered, the bonfire is unlit, butthe Sole Survivor can interact with the bonfire to kindle it, which will cause three stimpaks to magically appear. After this, the sword can be taken, which will cause another three stimpaks to spawn, making this both a visual and practical fun Easter egg.
Fallout 4: Which Raider Gang Should You Side With In Nuka-World?
Keeping the peace between three raider gangs in Fallout 4’s Nuka-World is no mean feat and knowing who to keep around and who to betray is vital.
5The Castle & Nick Valentine - Location & Dialogue
Two References To Edgar Allan Poe
There are two Edgar Allan Poe references inFallout 4,with the first beinga quote from Nick Valentine as the Prydwen first arrives in the Commonwealth. As the giant airship soars overhead, if Nick is present as a companion, he will quote:“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing…“This line is from Poe’s famous poemThe Ravenbut another short story of Poe’s is also featured in the game.
While completing the Minutemen questline and exploring deep under the Castle, the Sole Survivor can find the body of General McGann. Next to him are wine crates containingbottles of Amontillado wine and opposite is a skeleton inside a partially bricked-up wall. These are direct references to Poe’sThe Cask of Amontillado, which was inspired by a local legend Poe heard during his time spent serving at Fort Independence.
4Cait, Codsworth, & Deacon - Dialogue
Three References To Monty Python & The Holy Grail
Fallout 4’s companionshave got some fantastic dialogue, some of which can be poignant, while at other times very funny. Cait, Codsworth, and Deacon all share the honor of having lines that are hilarious references to the 1975 filmMonty Python and the Holy Grail. Cait’s can occur when she’s swapped with X6-88 whereshe’ll reference the confrontation between King Arthur and the Black Knight:“Yeah, what are you gonna do, leak oil all over me?”
Both Codsworth’s and Deacon’sMonty Pythonlines can occur in combat, with Codworth also referencing the Black Knight with:"‘Tis but a scratch!“Deacon’s is a little more specific and can trigger when he is attacked by a turret:“Hey you! How do you taunt a turret? Your mother was a pea shooter? See, I got nothing.“This is, of course,a reference to the hilarious French Knight scene where King Arthur and his knights are tauntedby asking if their mother was a hamster.
3Tattoo Magazine, Raiders, & A Plant - Various
Three References To Skyrim
Having such an impressive back catalogue, it makes sense that Bethesda would reference its own games within others and there arethree cheekySkyrimEaster eggs inFallout 4. The first is the small and easy-to-miss artwork on Taboo Tattoos #4, which features a skull wearing a horned helmet like the famous headwear of the Dragonborn. Next is combat dialogue that raiders may cry out when injured, referencing an infamousSkyrimguard line:“Oh f**k me. Bullet in the knee…”
The most blatantSkyrimEaster egg, though, has to bethe presence of nirnroot in theFalloutuniverse. In Senior Scribe Neriah’s lab on the Prydwen, the Sole Survivor can find a tray of experimental plants that are described to grow near rivers. Thankfully, these experimental plants don’t make the same noise as nirnroot and can be harvested, but beyond eating them in Survival mode, it has no benefit.
2Pickman Gallery, Dunwich Borers, Kingsport Lighthouse, & Cabot House - Various
Four References To H.P. Lovecraft
There are plenty of H.P. Lovecraft references dotted throughoutFallout 4with many revolving around Cthulhu andThe Dunwich Horror. Dunwich Borer, an unsettling location, is a direct reference; however, the Cabot House questline also features Easter eggs related to Lovecraft. Lorenzo’s journal mentions the city of Rub’ al-Khali as a reference toThe Nameless City.
10 Weirdest & Strangest Fallout 4 Side Quests That You May Have Missed
Fallout 4 has tons of places to explore and side quests to keep players busy, and some of them can end up being truly bizarre experiences.
Lorenzo’s journals are filled with smaller Lovecraft references and the entire questline is great for any fans of the eldritch horror genre. There are also two locations named after Lovecraft’s works, with Pickman Gallery and Pickman himself being nods to the short storyPickman’s Model, which is about a disturbed painter. Meanwhile, the Kingsport Lighthouse is named after the seaside town of Kingsport from short stories such asThe Terrible Old ManandThe Festival.
1Takahashi, Mass Fusion, & Covenant - Various
Five References To Blade Runner
The amazing 1982 cult classicBlade Runnergets a lot of love inFallout 4with five references popping up throughout the game. They range from small details, such as the character in the artwork for"Hunter/Hunted"looking very similar to Deckard, toDeckard being one of the names Codsworth can say. However, there are three big Easter eggs thatBlade Runnerfans should keep an eye out for in their next playthrough.
Pipes at the back of the Mass Fusion Containment Shed building will need to be climbed on before an air conditioner can be jumped on to reach the rooftop.
The first is some environmental storytelling on the roof ofFallout 4’s Mass Fusion Containment Shed witha raider and synth arranged similarly to the “tears in rain” sceneat the end ofBlade Runner. The SAFE test conducted by the settlement of Covenant is also a reference to the Voight-Kampff test in the movie. Finally, Diamond City noodle seller Takahashi’s single line of dialogue is lifted directly fromBlade Runner, imperfect grammar and all.
Fallout 4
Bethesda’s action RPG Fallout 4 puts players into the vault suit of the Lone Survivor, a pre-war soldier from an alternate future cryogenically frozen inside Vault 111. After their infant son is kidnapped, they venture out into the irradiated wasteland of the Commonwealth to scour the ruins of Boston for any sign of him. In doing so, they encounter various factions and companions and use an array of skills and abilities to navigate the apocalyptic remnants of society.
