InStar Wars: Darth Maul - Black, White & Red#3 by Erica Schultz and Leonard Kirk,Darth Maul is sent on a mission by Darth Sidiousto find and assassinate a Devaronian named Coir Cion, who was blackmailing Palpatine and threatened to expose him as a corrupt politician, which would only make keeping the fact that he’s a Sith Lord a secret that much more difficult. Maul tracks Cion to a far-off moon, where he has formed a small army to keep him safe until Palpatine pays him off. What Cion wasn’t expecting, however, was someone like Darth Maul coming for him.
Darth Maul lands on this moon, and is greeted by the full-force of Cion’s mercenaries. Needless to say, they didn’t stand a chance. Maul then launches an assault on the location in which Cion is holed up, killing everyone who dared to defend the Devaronian. As he’s cutting down every single person he sees, before finally killing Cion himself, Maul comments on how futile their efforts are, uttering the retrospectively dark quote, “It is a pity they simply cannot accept their own deaths”.

Darth Maul was famously ‘killed’ inThe Phantom Menacewhen Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced his body in half before it fell into a trash chute. At the time, that seemed to be the end of Darth Maul, but fans were proven wrong when he made his return in the animated seriesStar Wars: The Clone Wars. It was there that fans learned Darth Maul simply refused to die. He kept himself alive through sheer force of will, and managed to create a crude robotic spider-body to make himself whole until he was fully revived by the Night Sisters.
Like those he so callously criticizes in thisStar Warscomic book issue, Darth Maul could not accept his own death. When he said the quote, Maul was one of the most powerful individuals in the galaxy. Practically everyone was beneath him during the events of this comic, and Maul never saw himself as someone who would need to ‘accept his own death’, as he believed he would always be the one delivering it. But, why this quote is so dark is that Maul would learn soon afterward why people will fight for every inch of life.
Darth Maul Eventually Lives By This Quote Upon His Somber End

While Maul refuses to live by this quote during his post-prequel resurrection, he eventually lives by it upon his ultimate, somber end. When Maul finally tracks down Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine, he challenges the Jedi Master to one final lightsaber duel, as he still craved vengeance for his defeat inEpisode I. Unfortunately, Maul is no match for the level of Jedi Master Obi-Wan has become since they last met, and he was killed almost immediately. But, rather than clinging to life, Maul accepted his death as he breathed his last breaths in Obi-Wan’s arms.
Darth Maul’s quote in this comic seemingly predicted his ultimate demise, when he did finally accept his fate, and allowed himself to die. And that only came after years of clinging to life with every fiber of his being, during which time Maul actively refused the ‘advice’ he offered those he was slaughtering. Palpatine’s apprentice, Darth Maul was nothing more than a tool to winnow down the ranks of the Jedi ahead of Darth Sidious' true plans. Discarded after he was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Naboo, Darth Maul swore revenge against all those he blamed for his past struggles - Jedi and Sith alike. Maul tended to operate within the shadows, running various syndicates, and even established himself as a true rival for Palpatine on at least one occasion. He was eventually killed by Obi-Wan in a duel on Tatooine.
